Lesson 2:
Let's understand the science concepts connected to CI by making connections between CI and a real biome--weather, earth surface, animals/habitat, and vegetation. Islandbiomeci-5_pic.jpg
Standards Addressed:
Science
1.01: Describe and compare several common ecosystems (communities of organisms and their interaction with the environment).

ELA Common Core Standards
RI.5.1. Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
RI.5.7. Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
Lesson Objective:
To compare and contrast using visual and informational text differences and similarities between Crystal Island and a real biome.
Assessment:
Each group will generate at least 5 guiding questions after they have researched. Groups should be able to justify how or why they developed the questions. Teachers should facilitate research to encourage higher level questioning.

Students will research books, websites and additional resources to ask questions about habitats, weather, earth surface, etc. Each group will generate at least 5 questions. Encourage higher level questioning.

Teachers guiding questions: What do you see? What do you know? What do you predict?
Tools:
Computers, KWL charts, research books
Introduction:
Today we are going to compare what we observed in a virtual environment to a real life environment. By researching examples of tropical biomes, you will develop guiding questions for our unit of study of Crystal Island and tropical biomes.
Procedures:
  1. Students will view photographs of tropical biomes.
  2. Students will research tropical biomes using research books, websites and additional resources. Information learned will be recorded on a KWL. (some website resources are listed in materials/resources)
  3. Students will develop at least 5 guiding questions to guide research and learning throughout the unit.
  4. Students will share questions and compile all questions on a class KWL.
Materials/ Resources:
  • Crystal Island
  • Internet
